Good Advice Not Taken-Big Mistake

I love the weekend. Doesn’t everyone? I love to sleep in and enjoy the morning in my PJ’s. Well this morning was no exception. I woke up around 10 AM. Yes-you read right. 10:00 AM. I’m proud to say it, too.

Since we are still all in the living room, I get to wake up to the most wonderful view of our garden trees. I love it. I feel like I’m at some resort on vacation. So on the weekend, I have a tendency to wake up and then just lie in bed for half an hour looking out the windows. It’s so serene and calm.

Around 10:30 I decided that I had better get up and start my day. Normally on Saturdays I start the coffee, make some breakfast and watch something interesting on TV like “Tous Ensemble” or “Maison A Vendre”. If nothing terrific is showing then it’s the old, mindless stand-by “Luxe TV”.

Well today started out normal, I woke up late, stayed in bed for the usual half an hour then got up to make coffee. That was where the normal part ended. After I started the coffee I went over to the TV and turned it on. Dude and I had watched a movie the night before so when I turned on the TV it was still on the same movie channel. This morning  there was a movie about to start and some guy was introducing it, but the sound was all the way down because Dude and Tinki were still asleep. I figured I would see what the movie was all about before changing channels. While this guy was doing his intro, I walked back into the kitchen to get all my stuff ready for making breakfast.

When I walked back into the living room I was greeted by the most outrageous piece of porn that should never be on at 10:30am on a Saturday morning! It was also in the first 3 minutes of the film! Please!!! What was the world coming to??! Good thing the sound was turned down or it probably would have woken up my gang. The worst part was that I couldn’t change the channel (not cuz I didn’t want to, but because I really couldn’t)! See lately we’ve been having a problem with our cable box. We’re in the process of rewiring the house and have only gotten some of the lines done, but we still need to redo the outside lines (not sure if this is the problem, but it seems to have begun at this point). Well, for the past few weeks our cable box just gets stuck. You can’t turn the channel and you can’t fix the sound.

Fortunately at this moment the sound was down, like I mentioned, but unfortunately my cable box and remote had to pick a terrible time not to cooperate with each other. So there I was, right in front of my giant TV screen (at eye level I might add), with XXX rated stuff happening at Saturday morning cartoon time and frantically trying to change channels. I finally decided to take the batteries out of the remote and put them back in thinking that would help. I looked at the TV screen, nope still XXX going on. By this I was beginning to go into shock cuz it was getting worse on screen and a little hot in the room. Is there such thing as XXXX movies??!!

At this point, I decided just to pull the plug on the cable box. Unlucky for me there are 3 of them to choose from. I pulled the one I thought would work and all I got was “your signal has been lost” with the picture of full on boobies right in front of me as a screen shot window saver! Dang it! I kept thinking Dude was gonna wake up and say, “Is this what you watch in your spare time?” Geesh.

Finally I found the right plug, pulled it and the screen went dark. I was making so much noise by now that Dude woke up and asked me what I was doing. Since I am a good and honest girl, I told him the truth. He was like, really, at this time of day?? He told me to take the batteries out of the remote. I told him I tried that already and it didn’t work. Just for extra good measure I decided I would try it again before turning the cable back on. No sense in giving myself a heart attack when flipping the switch.

I plugged the cable box back in and that dang movie came on again (luckily the “hot stuff” was over by then), but this time I was able to change the channel to something more Saturday morning appropriate. I found a nice show on houses in France.

After this little episode, I suddenly remembered some advice that a friend of mine living in France had given me. She said that if you watch a movie at night, make sure that when you go to bed to turn the channel to something more family friendly. She told me that one night her and her husband were watching a movie and they both happened to fall asleep with the TV on. Sometime in the middle of the night she woke up and was in such shock at what she saw on the TV that she screamed out, threw her remote across the room and ran over as quick as she could (she said Olympic style) to turn off the TV. She said it took her 3 months to get over what she saw and personally, I think she might still have psychological damage from it.

Well, guess what? I didn’t heed her good advice. I should have and I will from now on just to avoid any trouble for myself in the future. Dang French TV.

I think that after my difficult morning and working the rest of the day on the house, I’m going to enjoy a nice dinner, a glass of wine and a more down to earth movie. “Somewhere in Time” here I come.

About backyardprovence

I was finally able to realized my dream of living in France when I moved here in 2010. I love to read,I love history and road trips. I want to be doing anything outside in the fresh air. I want to have an entire room devoted to a personal library.

  1. I suppose you were not watching thé Disney Channel then… I am changing subjects but Personally I think that thé amount of violence and crime seen on TV is as damaging and aggressive as porn.Hope you’ll have a more pleasant morning this Sunday!

    • Bernard-
Isn’t funny how different cultures regard things. Growing up in the states no one thought anything of all the violence at the cinema or on TV, but sex in either instances was always far worse for young eyes! This is changing a bit now, but I still think Americans on a whole tend to think they same as they use to. I personally never let my kids watch really violent movies or play violent video games when they were younger. It’s strange coming from me because I happen to like violent movies (but not slashers). I have to say that “The Boondock Saints” and “300” are at the very top of my list. I’m always up for a gunslinger movie or something with real action/crime drama. I can honestly say that if either “Boondock Saints” or “300” would have been stuck on my TV this morning I would have said, “Oh Cool!” and sat down and watched it never thinking a bit about how violent they are! I guess it’s all in how you grow up! In any case, 10:30AM was still a bit early for me. Kind of like a shot a vodka at 8AM!

  2. Ha! Hilarious. I have to say the strangest adult program I’ve ever seen on tv was also in France while my wife was clicking around one night. I still have no idea what the premise was but it was more bizarre than anything and even after changing the channel we had to revisit it occasionally, just to confirm its weirdness. I guess when we foreigners sign up for the European lifestyle we’re signing up for the whole package…maybe a bit more “package” than we bargain for at times? Thanks for the chuckle before falling asleep.

    • Corey-
It’s funny how in France, you have to be so careful about searching out a TV program. I seriously never had to worry about what I was about to click on when I was living in The States. Those programs you had to ask for!

  3. We never turn on our TV here in Sablet so not totally current about what is on French TV. I do need to check it out since one of our guests who did said that since France went digital the French channels were affected but not the foreign ones on our cable system.

    • Michel-
Make sure it’s set to Disney Channel (or some other kids programming ) before you do. That way you won’t get a big shocker when you decide to test it out. No matter what hour of the day!

  4. Lol. It has happened to once or twice in the UK.(Late at night I might add). But at least I get the choice to block them, and they stay blocked. I think this problem of porn getting put on to our TV screens is getting worse and should be taken off for good. If people want to watch that sort of filth then there is plenty of it on the internet. As for yourself, what a wake-up call!

    • Stephen-
I totally agree. That’s how it is in The States. You gotta ask for it. After the whole episode, it was actually hilarious to me. The funny part that I forgot about (and forgot to write in the post) was that in the corner of the screen it said -10 (which means “no one under 10” in France terms). Whatever! More like no one under 40. But then again, living in France, I gotta lighten up about stuff like that. It;s just all in how I was brought up in The States with that kind of stuff being on TV more taboo. Life sure can be crazy here! I’m sure it won’t be the last time that happens to me, but if it does, hopefully my cable and remote are talking to each other:)
